A Letter from Angela
One drizzly morning early this year, I consciously started searching for something positive to steady myself as the ground beneath federal support for science, public lands, and conservation trembled. I soon came upon the Jane Goodall Institute’s “Tree of Hope” activity. It did the trick, sparking the inspiration I was longing for. The activity is simple: draw a tree, label the roots as the people, experiences, and places that give you strength, and the branches as your hopes and dreams. I shared the exercise with my two teenage girls and then with our team at the San Juan Preservation Trust, reflecting on where we draw support and what we are collectively growing toward.
With Jane Goodall’s recent passing, that image feels especially powerful. Her life’s work was guided by the principle that real hope doesn’t stem from optimism alone, but from action. Each selfless choice sinks roots that may take hold beyond our sight, growing into something that outlives and surpasses us.
This year, I have seen that kind of hope flourish across the Preservation Trust. After nearly five decades, we strengthened our roots by moving into our new permanent headquarters in Friday Harbor. We also expanded opportunities for people to connect with the land through more events than ever before. Guided walks, volunteer days, and other gatherings brought neighbors together to learn, share, and act for the islands we love.
Through our three active campaigns—the Mt. Ben West Preserve, Vendovi Breakwater Restoration, and our Annual Membership Renewal—we continue to expand our reach, protecting the natural systems that sustain both wildlife and people. Like the roots of an old cedar, our strength grows through connection, between staff, volunteers, landowners, donors, and partners. Together, we form a community that works to keep these islands resilient and full of life.
Thank you for being part of this growing tree of hope and for helping its roots deepen each year, nurturing our commitment to conserve and care for this remarkable place, now and forever.
With gratitude,

Angela Anderson, Executive Director
Conserve
Island Land
With your support, we’ve advanced the “first C” of our mission this past year by protecting:
- 100 acres, 1,850 feet of shoreline, and 1,400 feet of freshwater lakefront with two conservation easements on Lopez and Orcas Islands
- 8 SJPT-owned acres and 1,400 feet of shoreline with the donation of a preserve on Stuart Island
Together with our landowner partners and donors, SJPT now protects 305 properties encompassing 19,008 acres, 51.7 miles of shoreline, and 25 miles of trails on 22 islands.
Here are a few of our 2025 conservation highlights:

LABRADOR TEA AND A LEGACY | Lopez Island
A 40-acre property with rural character, natural beauty, and a rare wildlife habitat is now conserved on Lopez Island. This year, Liz Ellis donated a conservation easement on her land to the San Juan Preservation Trust, ensuring its natural, open space, and scenic values are protected forever.
This newly conserved parcel bordering the east side of Hummel Lake hosts an extensive peat bog habitat, which is rare in the San Juan Islands. Labrador tea, a native shrub traditionally harvested by Indigenous tribes for brewing, grows here in abundance. Liz hopes this unique lakeshore habitat will support cultural practices, as well as provide opportunities for research in coordination with SJPT’s annual stewardship monitoring.
The property also features flat, open fields bordered by Douglas fir and seral-alder upland forest—an ideal setting for sustainable farming and forestry. In addition to protecting ecological health, Liz was deeply committed to preserving the land’s sustainable agricultural potential for future generations.
Thanks to Liz’s foresight and partnerships with the Preservation Trust and Kwiáht, her vision for the land’s future is now becoming a reality. The San Juan Preservation Trust is deeply grateful for her generosity, which ensures that future generations can continue to honor and steward this remarkable landscape in perpetuity.
PROTECTING THE FUTURE MT. BEN WEST PRESERVE | San Juan Island
This year, our conservation team took a big step toward protecting another major landscape on San Juan Island: the future Mt. Ben West Preserve. Perched above Haro Strait, this 30-acre property offers sweeping views, critical Garry oak habitat, rocky balds, mature Douglas firs, and the opportunity for future public trail access. It also presents a once-in-a-generation chance to connect adjoining nature preserves, linking existing habitat and public trail corridors.
The Preservation Trust has entered into a purchase agreement with private landowners who are seeking a conservation outcome. To complete the acquisition, we must raise $1.76 million before the scheduled closing of March 31, 2026.
Thanks to a deeply committed anonymous donor, every contribution will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $750,000 through February 9, 2026. This means that any support today will have double the impact on a landscape that benefits wildlife, island habitat, and future generations!
Once protected, the preserve will link nearby Preservation Trust and San Juan County Conservation Land Bank lands (see map), expand opportunities for Garry oak savannah and forest restoration, and open the door for future public trail access and on-site education opportunities.

PASSING THE BATON: SALMON RECOVERY AT CASCADE CREEK | Orcas Island
Where Cascade Creek flows into Buck Bay on Orcas Island, coho salmon return annually to spawn—a relatively rare event in the San Juans given the islands’ lack of large, rushing rivers. This place also carries deep Indigenous cultural significance and has been revisited annually by the intertribal Gathering of the Eagles Canoe Journey since 2020.
For several years, SJPT staff have worked to conserve about six acres of mature forest and wetlands on the eastern side of Cascade Creek, along with 275 feet of marine shoreline in Buck Bay. Permanently protecting these areas would help maintain pristine freshwater quality and support ongoing salmon spawning habitat.
Our Conservation Department collaborated closely with nearby landowners to determine boundary lines and developed a grant proposal to Washington’s Salmon Recovery Funding Board. In 2025, the project was assessed, ranked the highest priority within the San Juan Islands, and awarded $521,500 to support project costs related to acquisition and long-term stewardship.
While SJPT staff were eager to complete the project, the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank—which manages the Coho Preserve along the creek’s west side—was the ideal partner to carry conservation forward on the adjoining property. After years of coordination and relationship-building, the Preservation Trust “passed the baton” by transferring the Cascade Creek project and grant funding entirely to the Land Bank earlier this year.
This fall, the Land Bank Commission approved receipt of the grant funds. A closing is anticipated in 2026, marking another step forward in conserving important island habitat and cultural heritage.
Care
for Island Land
By year’s end, our Stewardship staff will have upheld the “middle C” of our mission by completing their annual monitoring of SJPT’s 75-owned preserves and 326 conservation easements.

A FOREST TRANSFORMED ON LOPEZ ISLAND
On the southern side of Lopez Island, a previously dense forest—so crowded with conifers that little light reached the ground—is beginning to breathe again. Today, a meandering path winds through the forest floor, where careful thinning has opened space for future understory growth and a healthier woodland.
This transformation began when landowners Flora Wiegmann and Jonathan Cargill noticed troubling signs: their forest looked overcrowded, unhealthy, and needed thoughtful intervention.
The Preservation Trust has held a conservation easement on Flora and Jonathan’s property since 2008. Like most of the 19,000 acres that SJPT protects, the land remains privately owned. Our staff monitors the property annually to ensure conservation easement terms are met and to document ecological conditions, but we don’t manage the land directly. That’s why it’s especially meaningful when landowners take the initiative to restore habitat in ways that uphold and even enhance the terms of their conservation easement.
Flora and Jonathan worked with forest management professionals to design a low-impact ecological thinning project aimed at improving forest health. Once drafted, our Stewardship Team collaborated with them to ensure the plan aligned with their conservation easement. Over the past year, variable-density thinning was conducted across 35 acres of Flora and Jonathan’s property, removing less than 20% of the trees to promote a healthier, more resilient forest structure. The newly thinned area is also expected to lower wildfire risk and boost carbon storage by providing more light, water, and nutrients for remaining trees to grow larger.
This partnership represents some of the best of what stewardship can be: private landowners and land trust staff working together to care for conserved land. We’re grateful to Flora and Jonathan for investing in the long-term health of their forest on Lopez Island!

RENEWING FRESHWATER NETWORKS
Across the islands, multi-year efforts to restore and protect watersheds are steadily underway. Last November, SJPT staff and partners gathered at Red Mill Farm Preserve on San Juan Island to begin restoring the banks of False Bay Creek. The project is part of a growing vision of watershed renewal that’s also driving major restoration work at two other Preservation Trust preserves. At JB Farm on Orcas Island, crews planted hundreds of trees and installed beaver dam analogs to mimic natural beaver engineering and expand wetland habitat, and at Sundstrom Farm on San Juan Island, hundreds of streambank plantings are now taking root.
The push for restoration at Red Mill Farm began when water-quality testing revealed high levels of bacteria in False Bay Creek, which drains into the sensitive marine habitat of False Bay. With support from state and county funding, SJPT staff fenced cattle out of the creek, installed a new livestock watering system, and began restoring streamside vegetation.
Working alongside the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank and the San Juan Islands Conservation District, crews completed the first phase of plantings along 1,200 feet of False Bay Creek. Thousands of native trees and shrubs—willow, dogwood, and other moisture-loving species—were planted on both SJPT- and Land Bank–owned properties. Over the next few years, an additional 2,400 feet of creek will receive thousands of similar plantings, gradually forming a shaded corridor that filters rain runoff and cools the creek.
Together, these multi-pronged restoration projects help soils retain water, contribute to island aquifer recharge, and benefit the people and wildlife that depend on these freshwater networks.

VENDOVI ISLAND BREAKWATER RESTORATION
Caring for land in perpetuity is a critical part of our mission. But sometimes our protected lands come with buildings, access roads, docks, and even kitchen sinks that all require care and maintenance. On Vendovi Island Preserve, one critical structure now needs urgent attention: the North Cove breakwater.
Since 2010, Vendovi has been open to the public, welcoming about 2,500 visitors between April and September each year. Boaters, kayakers, students, and hikers arrive through the North Cove before exploring 217 acres of lush forests, wildflower meadows, serene shorelines, and three miles of trails. But all access depends on the North Cove breakwater, which shelters the island’s only dock and creates calm water for both people and wildlife.
After years of weathering tides and storms, the breakwater now requires major repairs. Our team has completed site assessments, coordinated with engineers, and obtained environmental permits. We also continue to monitor the area’s sensitive wildlife habitat to inform restoration plans. Pigeon Guillemots nest in crevices near the breakwater and depend on calm waters to raise their young. Purple Martins, Washington’s largest swallows, return each spring from the Amazon to nest in boxes above the dock.
To assist with the estimated $660,000 cost of repairing the breakwater, the Preservation Trust has launched a campaign to raise $280,000 in private contributions—ensuring continued public access and habitat protection. As part of the work, we will also remove shoreline armoring to restore natural coastal processes for salmon and other fish.

A NEW HOME IN FRIDAY HARBOR
This spring, the San Juan Preservation Trust moved into its new headquarters at 315 Court Street in Friday Harbor. Located just a short walk from the ferry terminal, the updated space (a former U.S. Post Office) offers improved functionality for staff collaboration and a more accessible setting for meetings, events, and conversations with our partners and supporters.
Since our founding in 1979, the Preservation Trust has worked across the archipelago to protect land for the benefit of people and nature. Over the decades, our staff, board, and volunteers have operated from various locations, often making the most out of limited spaces. This new home represents a meaningful step forward, and one that supports the next chapter of our mission.
While our work remains focused in the field—on conserving and caring for critical island landscapes—this new headquarters deepens our community roots. We look forward to seeing you in town!

THE GROUND WE SHARE: PEOPLE, PLACE, AND PURPOSE
Our mission to connect the community with the lands we protect reached new heights this year as over 850 people joined us for 65 events! From hands-on volunteer work days to our new Walk ’n’ Talk series, these gatherings brought people onto SJPT-protected lands to learn, explore, and lend a hand.
More than 190 volunteers contributed over 1,000 hours of service this year, helping with everything from invasive species removal to trail upkeep. Their energy and dedication brought new life to places we care for deeply.
Whether planting trees, walking a trail, or simply connecting on the land, these moments deepen our shared sense of place. We’re appreciative to everyone who joined us and look forward to building even more connections in the year ahead.

A SUMMER OF YOUTH STEWARDSHIP
Across Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan Islands, the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) spent the summer rolling up their sleeves and making a real impact on our preserves. From creating research study plots to removing invasive weeds like tansy and teasel, these hardworking students helped to support local habitats throughout the islands.
Along the way, YCC crews learned about forest health, tree-ring studies, beaver ecology, native and invasive plant identification, and “Leave No Trace” principles. Each project combined hands-on learning with a deeper understanding of our stewardship practices.
YCC crews also built “bog bridges”, widened trails, repaired washed-out paths, and shared what they learned with community members during outreach events.
We are deeply grateful for the enthusiasm and dedication these young stewards brought to every project, and for our partnership with the San Juan Islands Conservation District in making this youth program possible.
