Susan Briggs
1943 – 2007
Susan Briggs devoted her career to education as an English teacher at Bennet Jr. High in Manchester, CT, and a school librarian, preschool teacher, and parent education instructor in Washington. She moved to Washington State in 1978 and subsequently retired to Guemes Island. Upon her retirement, Susan was a very active community volunteer and ran a house-watch and pet sitting business.
Susan was a passionate supporter of conservation and land protection in the Skagit Valley, the San Juan Islands, and on Guemes Island in particular. She included several conservation non-profits, including the San Juan Preservation Trust, as part of her legacy. She died on November 3, 2007 at University of Washington Hospital. Her bequest helped the Preservation Trust and the Skagit Land Trust to acquire the Guemes Mountain Preserve on her beloved Guemes Mountain.
