The San Juan Preservation Trust works with our local communities and people like you to permanently conserve and care for special places throughout the San Juan Islands.
We acknowledge that we reside on the ancestral lands and waters of the Coast Salish people, who have called this place home since time immemorial, and we honor the inherent, aboriginal, and treaty rights that have been passed down from generation to generation.
Instead of a #WildlifeWednesday post, we're trying out a #WatercolorWednesday post today so we could showcase a lovely scene that was submitted to us by a couple of supporters of SJPT's work.
Kathy and David Finholm of San Juan Island are dedicated volunteers for the Preservation Trust’s Western Bluebird Project.
They teamed up this spring to capture this image of a hungry bluebird. Kathy (one of the reigning Golden Nest Box Award winners) photographed the bird eating a worm, then David transformed her photo into a pen and watercolor sketch.
“The bluebird had just grabbed the worm from the ground and landed on a fencepost to eat,” David said. “Both a male and female were perched on a fence wire. The male dove down to get the worm on the ground, then swooped up to the post and gobbled it. Great shot, Kathy!”
Great shot, indeed!
Thank you so much, Kathy and David, for your diligent eyes, unwavering support of our work with the bluebirds, and for sharing your creative outlets.

The San Juan Preservation Trust is pleased to announce this year’s Climate Leadership Scholarship winners.
*drum roll please*
Congratulations to Justin Krisch-Derr and Roan Ontjes-De Groot. Both will graduate from Orcas Island High School and they both plan to attend Western Washington University to concentrate in environmental science.
For the fourth year in a row, a committee of Preservation Trust board members selected a pair of high school seniors from a truly impressive group of applicants from across San Juan County. Justin and Roan will each receive a $4,000 scholarship, awarded in two $2,000 increments for each of their first two years of college.
The intent of the scholarships is to recognize and encourage students in our island communities who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment, effort, and imagination in addressing the issue of climate change, and who plan a course of collegiate study that equips them to advance their climate leadership goals.
Here’s a snippet of Justin and Roan’s thoughts on receiving the award:
Justin Krisch-Derr:
I know this [scholarship] is going to help me in my future and give me a greater chance of pursuing something I love in college and as a career.
Roan Ontjes-De Groot:
This scholarship gives a lot of people that extra push and emphasizes environmental leadership. So thank you — it means a lot!

We built an aviary last week!
Thanks to a handful of strong, savvy, and enthusiastic volunteers, we managed to construct an aviary that will house some translocated Western Bluebirds this summer.
The family of Western Bluebirds (a mated pair of parents and their offspring) are going to be translocated to San Juan Island from our partners at Joint base Lewis-McChord. These birds will help usher in a new generation of bluebirds in the 17th year of SJPT's Western Bluebird Project and we can rest easier now knowing that their first home is completed and should be one that sets them up for success.
We're so excited to welcome the new residents to the island later this month and we will definitely be sharing updates once they're here.
In the meantime, if you are a participant in SJPT's Bluebird Project, please continue to keep an eye out for bluebirds and log your reports, as every sighting and observation will help inform our ongoing work this spring.
Please also reach out if you're at all interested in helping us out with the translocated birds this summer, as we will likely want some extra helping hands when the bluebirds arrive in June.
