It's #AmericanWetlandMonth and that's a cause for celebration for us at SJPT!

The Preservation Trust protects many different types of wetlands around the islands, and each one of them plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy, diverse ecosystem for the lifeforms there.

From the isthmus at the Henry Island Preserve to various marshes on Orcas Island to many creeks on San Juan Island, and many more in between, these wet pockets of protected habitat are incredibly important to the archipelago.

Wetlands provide habitat for thousands of species of aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals. Wetlands are much-needed for flood protection, water quality improvement, shoreline erosion control, breeding habitat, and they're wonderful to sit next to and simply observe the amazing biodiversity.

Wetlands are among the most productive habitats on earth providing shelter and nursery areas for commercially and recreationally important animals like fish and shellfish, as well as wintering grounds for migrating birds. Coastal marshes are particularly valuable for preventing loss of life and property by moderating extreme floods and buffering the land from storms; they also form natural reservoirs and help maintain desirable water quality.

Three cheers for wetlands, this month and every month!

Please feel free to reach out if you want some advice on visiting a wetland near you.

The Gathering of the Eagles Canoe Journey begins this weekend!

The Gathering of the Eagles is a spiritual journey of healing, hope, honor, happiness and hospitality that celebrates intergenerational cultural heritage.

The week-long canoe journey will paddle through the islands with potlatch-style gatherings of food, arts, and cultural exchanges.

The trip will follow the ancestral highways of the Lhaq’temish, Lummi, people, beginning May 19th and running through May 23rd in the Lhaq’temish homelands of Lopez, San Juan, Orcas and Lummi Islands.

The gatherings will host islanders, Tribes and First Nations from across North America, including the interfaith community of the Pacific Northwest along with special guests from South Africa, Australia, Egypt, Hopi and Navajo Nations.

Whether you can be there in the afternoon to greet and welcome the canoes ashore, to help out at dinner and bring a dish to share, or just to witness the cultural exchange and storytelling happen in the evening around the fire, we highly recommend it for every islander!

What an honor and privilege we have to attend this gathering. Let’s all come together to share and care as neighbors of the Salish Sea!

How you can support the Gathering of the Eagles:

Donate $100 to help cover blankets and gifts (contributions can be made by visiting: sanjuans.org/gathering-of-the-eagles

Bring a side dish to share at the potluck at 5pm on May 20th at Jackson Beach

Volunteer by helping to set up dinner for canoe families on May 20th at Jackson Beach at 4 pm. Email Jess@sanjuans.org to sign up!

Help spread the word!

Some SJPT staff members visited Guemes Island this past Monday to explore potential conservation projects and visit our beloved preserves, including the Peach Preserve. The Peach Preserve is open to the public and within walking distance from the Guemes ferry landing! A final stop at the Guemes Island General Store for delicious homemade coconut macaroons topped off a perfect day.
