Arthur Whiteley

1916 – 2013

Arthur H. Whiteley was a dedicated scientist, naturalist and conservationist. Throughout a distinguished academic and research career, Dr. Whiteley was known in the San Juan Islands for his leadership at University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Labs and for establishing the Helen Riaboff Whiteley Center in his beloved late wife’s memory. He was a loyal member of the San Juan Preservation Trust, and donated a Conservation Easement on his 20-acre waterfront property on San Juan Island in 1990. A pioneer conservation leader in the San Juan Islands, Arthur’s final membership gift came to us in the form of a generous bequest. In keeping with his commitment to the health of our islands, the Preservation Trust’s board of trustees designated that his bequest be placed in the Trust’s Stewardship Fund.
