A Letter from Angela
One of my favorite places to find joy and connection with nature is the Lost Oak Trail on Turtleback Mountain. I was introduced to it and the adjoining trails on Turtleback the first time I visited Orcas Island five years ago. Now that I live on Orcas, I hike these trails whenever I can. While I never tire of the stunning views, my favorite thing about hiking these trails is seeing lots of Garry oaks.
Oaks support more forms of life than any other tree genus in North America. Beyond their ecological value as keystone species, oaks also have symbolic significance for me. I often reflect on parallels between how they grow and SJPT’s growth as an organization.
Oaks grow big but start small. During their first few years, they sprout only a few leaves and remain just a few inches tall. They direct most of their energy into developing a robust root system. Once firmly rooted, oaks are poised to mature into towering, majestic trees that support habitat-oases full of diverse life.
You are a vital part of SJPT’s root system. Through your generous gifts of time and treasure, you’ve nourished and anchored the organization as it’s gradually matured since its founding in 1979.
Today we are poised for a significant expansion, beefing up our trunk and branches to bear the weight of significant challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. This year, thanks to your support, we’ve strengthened our infrastructure in several ways. Among them:
- We hired seven new employees (a single-year record), two of them to fill existing open positions and five to fill new or expanded positions.
- The five (soon to be six) new positions have expanded our capacity in the areas of conservation, educational outreach, philanthropy, accounting, and technology support.
- We’ve made tangible progress along our journey towards greater justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, seeking to expand our “canopy” to include more people and partners.
- We completed a new Strategic Conservation Plan, which places a high priority on addressing existing and predicted impacts of climate change.
In the following pages, we highlight a variety of ways in which we’ve advanced the “three Cs” of our mission—Conserve, Care, and Connect—in 2022. Most of all, we dedicate this “Year in Review” to acknowledging and thanking you, our donors, volunteers, and partners, the steadfast “roots” that ground us and make our work possible.

CONSERVE
the natural beauty, vital ecosystems, and unique character of the San Juan Islands for future generations
With your support, we’ve advanced the “first C” of our mission this past year by protecting:
- 56 acres and 2,300 feet of shoreline via an anonymously donated conservation easement, which expands upon and connects large adjacent private and public conservation lands along a spectacular stretch of coastline.
- 274 acres through acquisition, including the 33-acre Ihiya Biological Preserve, 49-acre Sugarloaf property, and 192-acre JB Farm (more details below).1,7
Together with our landowner partners and donors, SJPT now protects 298 properties encompassing 18,169 acres, 51 miles of shoreline, and 25 miles of trails on 22 islands.

NORTH SHORE PROPERTY Orcas Island
This year we celebrated the successful acquisition of the 58-acre waterfront North Shore (aka Glenwood Inn) property on Orcas Island. Now owned and managed by our partner in the project, the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank, this acquisition will provide much-needed public shoreline access on Orcas and protects a vital stretch of shoreline in one of the region’s highest-priority areas for salmon recovery. We are raising funds for the eventual purchase of a conservation easement that will help finance the county’s purchase and ensure the “gold standard” of permanent protection.

“SUGARLOAF” PROPERTY San Juan Island
On October 20, we completed acquisition of a truly special 49-acre property that borders Mount Grant Preserve and closely connects with additional protected public and private lands. The property, known locally as “Sugarloaf” for its distinctive shape that is visible from many parts of San Juan Island, is home to old-growth forest, rocky bald habitat that supports uncommon prairie plants, and a shady, forested pond and fern grotto.
Many thanks to all who made permanent protection of this property possible, including land donors Charles Simenstad and Stephanie Martin, Robert Amundson and Mary Sullivan Taylor, and Lynn and Rana Wilcox, as well as Clare Meeker and Dan Grausz, who generously contributed funds needed to complete the project.

LOPEZ HILL PRESERVE ADDITION Lopez Island
We hope to close late this year (or early in 2023) on a 75-acre conservation easement that protects an addition to the Land Bank’s existing 400-acre Lopez Hill Preserve. Our purchase of this easement is the last step in a series of land transactions involving SJPT, the Land Bank, and the Lopez Community Land Trust. The three-way collaboration expanded a cherished nature preserve while also enhancing food security and affordable farming opportunities at the heart of Lopez Island. Our thanks to those who made donations to ensure this project’s success.

JB FARM Orcas Island
We acquired, via donation, 192 acres of open space, natural habitat, and agricultural land in Orcas Island’s Crow Valley. The property was already protected as part of a 322-acre conservation easement. Ownership of the property will allow us to enhance conservation values through restoration of wetland habitats and fencing along a creek corridor. We are grateful to the donor for her generosity and devotion to conserving her family’s heritage farm in perpetuity.

CONSERVATION PLAN
A year in the making, the Preservation Trust’s recently completed Strategic Conservation Plan incorporates the latest geographic information system (GIS) mapping data and analysis tools to respond to current and anticipated climate-change impacts by identifying the most critical sites in the islands where we and our conservation partners can best concentrate our resources for protection and restoration.
The plan creates the foundation for continuing our Conservation Program and achieving even more significant accomplishments over the next 10 years. Special thanks to the Land Trust Resilience Science and Capacity Building Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation for its financial support of the plan.

By year’s end, our Stewardship staff will have upheld the “middle C” of our mission by completing their annual monitoring of SJPT’s 74 owned preserves and 249 conservation easements.

PARTNERS IN STEWARDSHIP
Did you know that the Preservation Trust does not own most of the land that we are responsible for protecting? More than 16,000 (or 89 percent) of the total acreage under our Stewardship team’s vigilant watch is protected by conservation easements, or “CEs.” Some CE-protected land is publicly owned, but most of it, by far, is the private property of individuals and families. Collectively, these landowners play a huge role in caring for land throughout the islands.
During our annual monitoring visits, we witness many of our CE landowners rolling up their sleeves and dedicating themselves to all kinds of stewardship projects: planting native wildflowers for pollinators, growing food for our local communities through sustainable practices, removing noxious weeds to protect critical wildlife habitat, learning and applying forestry practices from the latest research to support their forests through climate change—and the list goes on. We are thrilled to be working alongside such devoted partners and are grateful for their efforts to keep our islands healthy and thriving.

BIG BLUEBIRD NEWS
Our San Juan Islands Western Bluebird Project notched a new milestone this summer when a mated pair chose to nest in a natural cavity of a Garry oak tree on San Juan Island. This is the first time we’ve documented a bluebird nest in a natural breeding site, rather than artificial nesting boxes—a big and necessary step toward our goal of reintroducing a self-sustaining Western Bluebird population to this part of their northern range. The pioneering pair raised not just one, but two broods in their natural nest! We hope to see them return this spring.

RESTORATION ON DECATUR
With financial assistance from a Washington State Large Scale Resiliency Grant, we’ve embarked on an experimental restoration project on the Kimball Preserve, located at the south end of Decatur Island. The goal is to improve the quality of the 64-acre preserve’s oak and wildflower habitat through releasing oaks from Douglas-fir competition, fencing out deer from a few small areas, reducing nonnative grasses, and planting native seeds and bulbs. The results of the experiment will inform our management on other preserves with similarly degraded habitat.

AND NOW FOR THE WEATHER
The 20-acre Phelps Preserve in lower San Juan Valley has been the site of many exciting conservation projects—an Island Marble Butterfly habitat patch, Garry oak establishment, nesting Western bluebirds—and now is home to an AgWeatherNet (AWN) station. In a partnership with WSU Extension’s San Juan County office, a 30-foot-tall tower was installed in a corner of the preserve. The station captures real-time weather data that provides island farmers and gardeners (and anyone else) with more localized information. (Previously, the closest AWN station was in Anacortes.) You can check out the Phelps weather station by visiting weather.wsu.edu and zooming in on San Juan Island.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION
SJPT’s first-ever Education Specialist, Liz Doane, had a busy first season advancing the “Connect” and “Care” aspects of the Preservation Trust’s mission by fostering youth service-learning opportunities on SJPT-protected lands. Campers from Camp Nor’Wester and Youth Conservation Corps crews performed various stewardship tasks on SJPT preserves spanning Waldron, Shaw, Orcas, and San Juan islands, while also absorbing environmental education lessons.
Liz has also been busy building partnerships with schools, teachers, and administrators with the intention of expanding SJPT’s environmental education programs during 2022-23 school year and beyond. We are grateful to The Dean Witter Foundation for their help in supporting these efforts.

A BEEHIVE OF ENGAGEMENT
The Marilyn and Fred Ellis Preserve on Shaw Island, with its multifaceted natural and cultural history, is an ideal setting for engagement of many kinds. The Sylvan Loop Trail, Tharald Homestead tours, popular field classes, and volunteer projects at the preserve provided an array of “connect” opportunities in 2022.
Visitors to the Ellis Preserve this year ranged in age from 3 to 93 and included island neighbors as well as travelers from France, South Africa, Baltimore, Ballard, and beyond. Whether they were removing invasive species, tending pollinator gardens, studying lichen, creating nature-inspired art, imagining the life of a homesteader, observing birds, or simply walking in quiet contemplation, quiet contemplation, their joy was reflected in the delight on their faces and heartfelt words of gratitude and appreciation.

ADVANCING EQUITY
We view justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) as crucial to our mission of creating healthier and more resilient communities, lands, and waters in the San Juan Islands. We made strides this year toward infusing these principles throughout the Preservation Trust’s programs and operations, including:
- Our board wrote, revised, and adopted a statement of Commitment to Equity and Justice.
- To ensure that this statement is reflected in our actions, each standing board committee (Connect, Finance, Development, Land Acquisitions, Nominating and Governance, Stewardship) is held accountable by its peers to set concrete, annual JEDI-related goals and show progress toward achieving them.
- We worked with Tahoma Peak Solutions, a native woman-owned consulting firm, to provide training, education, and audits in the areas of strategic communications, indigenous history, and native food sovereignty.
- In consultation with regional tribes and the state Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, we adopted guidelines for stewardship of Indigenous cultural sites on SJPT preserves.
- We increased our efforts to build relationships and to partner with tribal groups and other historically marginalized communities.
Working through an equity lens recognizes that when nature thrives, people and communities thrive!
