Otto Preserve

Lummi Island

Year protected: 2000

Land protected: 70 acres

Hiking Trails: 1.4 Miles

Trail Difficulty: Easy

This property, which we have protected with a conservation easement, is owned by our partner the Lummi Island Heritage Trust.

The main Loop Trail is a lovely walk through mature forest and is well protected in light rains due to many sheltering trees. The Loop Trail, together with the Baumgart Woods, Betty’s Shortcut and Walden Walk side trails, are an easy 1.4 mile walk. Dogs on leash are allowed.

The preserve’s extensive wetland is a haven for resident and migratory waterfowl. A diverse hillside forest shelters an important watershed and is superb habitat for warblers, woodpeckers, and a variety of raptors. As open space viewed from the county road and other island vantage points, the land provides a welcome respite from the built environment. An old shed at the edge of the property was renovated in early 2005, and now serves as the Lummi Island Heritage Trust’s office.

Access: The entrance to Otto Preserve is located at 3560 Sunrise Road on Lummi Island. The trailhead is beyond the parking lot. The Lummi Heritage Trust offices and Resource Center are located at the entrance to the Otto Preserve. Maps and educational materials are available. Visitors are welcome during business hours.
