North Shore Preserve

Orcas Island

Year protected: 2022

Land protected: 58 acres

Shoreline protected: 1,850 feet

Trail Difficulty: Easy / Moderate

The North Shore Preserve protects 58 acres of upland forest and 1,850 feet of shoreline in one of the islands’ highest-priority regions for salmon recovery. The preserve also provides much-needed public shoreline access to the Orcas Island community.

Since its purchase in 2022 by the San Juan Preservation Trust and San Juan County Conservation Land Bank, 13 structures and hundreds of tons of debris have been removed from the site, and parking and trails to support recreational access have been created. Throughout this transformation process, the Conservation Land Bank has also made significant progress in restoring the ecological integrity of the property through the re-establishment of wetlands, removal of thousands of invasive plants, and extensive revegetation of native plant species.

Access: Dawn to dusk hours only; no overnight parking or camping. See trail map and preserve signage for additional restrictions.
