Turtleneck Preserve: A Summer of Stewardship

This summer, the Youth Conservation Corps joined the San Juan Preservation Trust on Turtleneck Preserve to help remove and reposition anti-deer cages around growing trees.

While hiking up to the preserve, the students also learned about the delicate ecology of rocky balds throughout Turtleback Mountain, providing a great opportunity to reflect on how their stewardship work is protecting broader ecosystems.

Connecting with land and each other is one way that we can help inspire the next generation of conservationists.

Three Partners Celebrate Youth Outdoor Education & Stewardship

The Preservation Trust’s Lopez Schoolhouse Preserve, alongside the Lopez Island Historical Society’s Port Stanley Schoolhouse Preserve, hosted an open house in August to highlight the stewardship efforts and ecological monitoring projects of the 2024 Lopez Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) group.

Highlights of the open house included youth study site tours, educational art displays, a silent auction, and frozen lemonade served from a bicycle-powered blender. Most importantly, Lopez Island’s 13 YCC participants were able to share their stewardship work and vast knowledge of Lopez Island’s flora and fauna with the community.
