2024 Swan Count Wrap-Up

On the designated date for this year's annual swan Count—the morning of Friday, January 19, 2024—harsh winter weather fouled up the fowl count, leading to one of the lowest numbers of reported swan sightings in recent memory. But one year's data is just that, a single data point. On average, the swan population has been steadily increasing over the last decade or so, regionally, and holding steady in the San Juans.

Honoring Three Bluebird Project "Angels"

The Preservation Trust's Western Bluebird Project relies on a passionate corps of volunteers. These are the angels who give wings to the hope that this distinctive species can bring joy to future generations and serve as an emblem for oak-prairie conservation.

We lost three of our most dedicated “angels” this past year. Here, we wish to recognize their efforts and honor their memory with brief stories about their passion for bringing back the bluebirds. . . .
