Twin Lakes Conservation Easement

Orcas Island

In 1992, when planning the limited residential development of “Twin Lakes,” Jim and Bev Ohlman of Orcas Island knew that they wanted a large natural area surrounding their clustered development.  By placing a conservation easement on 171 of the 214 acres that they owned, they were able to create a subdivision that has been specifically designed to allow residential use that blends into the natural surroundings.  Only eleven building sites were designated at locations which fit the terrain and avoid the most ecologically sensitive areas. New owners of the building sites are advised of the importance of keeping their land use in harmony with the spectacular natural setting.

“The Ohlmans have made a significant contribution to preserve this area adjacent to Moran State Park, while still allowing for limited residential use,” said Bob Myhr, SJPT’s executive director at the time of this gift. “We are grateful to the Ohlmans and pleased to add this easement to Trust stewardship.  We hope that this Twin Lakes concept will both provide a model and set a standard by which future conservation-oriented development projects may be measured.”
