Smith Conservation Easement

San Juan Island

Year Protected: 1989

Land Protected: 5 acres

Public Benefits: Forest

Richard and Lucie Smith donated a conservation easement on 5 acres of their forested property off of Cattle Point Road on San Juan Island in 1989.  The property, a mix of large, old cedars and bigleaf maples, provides a welcome respite from the nearby developed area surrounding the San Juan Island Golf Club.  Bald eagles nesting nearby frequent the large trees as well as a host of smaller and more secretive birds.

Although the property has changed ownership since the Smith’s decision to conserve it, the current landowners continue to honor the Smith’s original vision and this diminutive parcel remains untouched, providing a haven for local wildlife.
