What a morning!

As the sun came up, a group of volunteers joined us to spread out over San Juan Island to check the island for Western Bluebirds now that they are back in town for breeding season. We do this to get an idea of how many breeding pairs are in the area while reducing the chances of birds being double counted. We look at the bands on the legs to ID individual birds to see who is returning year after year and who is new to the party! Can you see all 4 bands on the male in the photo?

After this morning, we can confirm that we have a new Bluebird couple!! That makes 6 mating pairs to start this season - one more than last year! This is big news, and makes us even more excited to see what next week's Bluebird Blitz will bring!

We couldn't do this work without our wonderful group of volunteers. Thank you to everyone that got up early to share in the excitement!

🎵 Did you hear? 🎶

The Bluebirds are arriving on San Juan Island!

Once abundant, their populations have declined due to habitat loss, and without active intervention, they may vanish entirely. As cavity-nesting birds, they rely on nest boxes that SJPT volunteers host, maintain, and monitor, as natural cavities continue to disappear.

Whether you’re a current bluebird volunteer or newly passionate about protecting these beautiful songbirds, we invite you to join us for an evening of discussion on the project’s progress, bluebird conservation, and opportunities to connect with fellow avian enthusiasts. Plus, snacks will be provided!

Date: Tuesday, March 25, 2025
Time: 6:30pm–8:00pm
Location: Red Mill Farm on San Juan Island
Bring: Questions and comments about volunteering with the San Juan Islands Western Bluebird Project

Register at SJPT.org/events
