The San Juan Preservation Trust works with our local communities and people like you to permanently conserve and care for special places throughout the San Juan Islands.
Last week's spring work party at the Illg Preserve felt like the peak of summer!
SJPT staff and a group of volunteers were baking in the sun at this exposed, south-facing preserve while we did our best to make a dent in a meadow rampant with teasel and other invasive plants. It was tough work, but the incredible panoramic views around us and the good cheer from everybody made the outing very rewarding.
We even found some isolated camas plants around the area, which gave us extra hope that some of the local plants that are meant to be there are patiently waiting their turn to take hold once they've been relieved of the pressure from all the teasel. It may seem daunting to take on projects like this, but it's so worth it for moments like those.

SJPT has many incredible partner organizations, and we'd like to shout out one of them: IOSA!
Islands Oil Spill Association (IOSA).
IOSA is a vitally important organization to these islands, as they are the only oil spill response organization in the San Juan Islands and the only non-profit, community-based spill response organization in the Pacific Northwest. IOSA is one of just a handful in the world.
IOSA’s many dedicated volunteers across the archipelago, including a handful of SJPT staff members, are the heart and soul of the operation and bring a wide variety of experience and knowledge to the effort. They help fulfill IOSA's mission, which is to provide the San Juan Islands with prompt, effective oil spill response and prevention, which includes training and coordinating of oil spill responders, maintaining spill response equipment, and educating about the prevention and containment of oil spills of all sizes and sources.
IOSA is another key steward of these islands and the living beings that reside here.
We invite you to follow them and to visit their website (iosaonline.org) to learn more about their great work.
Do you need to report a spill, or know how to?
If this is an active emergency with fire or risk of explosion, or an actively occurring spill, call 911 immediately.
Next, call WA Emergency Management Division at 800-OILS-911. Also, please call the USCG National Response Center at 800-424-8802.
San Juan County Dispatch, the County Department of Emergency Management, and IOSA will be notified.
Hopefully that doesn't happen, but at least IOSA is there to help.

There's a fun outing in store on San Juan Island next month!
We invite you to join SJPT staff for a guided tour around parts of San Juan Island, where we'll head to different locations to observe Western Bluebird and Island Marble Butterfly habitats.
For this event, we will meet in Friday Harbor before heading out to visit an Island Marble Butterfly patch on the south end of San Juan Island, where, if we are incredibly lucky, we may see an Island Marble Butterfly—but if not, you will learn about SJPT’s long-term conservation efforts on the recovery of this species. We will then travel through the lovely San Juan Valley to private land where we will hope to view nesting Western bluebirds and you will gain deeper insight into SJPT’s 18 years of dedication to the restoration of this beautiful native songbird back to its historic home.
We hope you can join us for this fun and free excursion in search of two of the Preservation Trust's most fabled flying friends!
