A Letter from Angela
Over my two decades in conservation, I’ve learned that this work is deeply personal and relational. I’m consistently blown away by stories of generosity and foresight from our community of supporters — land donors, volunteers, and San Juan Preservation Trust members. In every individual story, there is a common bond: a shared ethos that land is an integral part of us, just as we are a part of it.
This year has brought many more inspiring stories, from newly protected areas on San Juan and Guemes Islands to restoration projects and youth stewardship activities on Lopez, Orcas, San Juan, and Shaw. Our work reflects the transformative power of community in connection with the natural world, a community in which everyone belongs.
The San Juan Islands are world treasures and remain a vital refuge for keystone species that define the Pacific Northwest. But our region faces pressing challenges, including habitat degradation, loss of biodiversity, and the potential for catastrophic fire, all interconnected to the global climate crisis. Over the last five years, we have embarked on ambitious goals to address these challenges by dramatically increasing the scale, scope, and pace of conservation in the San Juans.
For us, conserving land is just the beginning. Stewarding the land then becomes a forever-responsibility, to which we are deeply committed. Looking ahead, we aim to enhance our stewardship work by restoring prairies, wetlands, and forests across the archipelago. Our goal is to support species recovery and safeguard our freshwater and other vital natural systems from the impacts of climate change. Together, we can create a resilient future for the islands.
In the following pages, we highlight many ways in which you’ve helped further advance our Conserve, Care, and Connect mission in 2024. Above all, in this season we want to thank you, our donors, volunteers, and partners, for making this work possible.
With sincere thanks,
Angela Anderson, Executive Director
CONSERVE Island Land
With your support, we’ve advanced the “first C” of our mission this past year by protecting:
- 157.8 acres with two conservation easements on San Juan Island.
- 6.4 SJPT-owned acres and 415 feet of shoreline with the donation of a preserve on Guemes Island.
Together with our landowner partners and donors, SJPT now protects 303 properties encompassing 18,862 acres, 51.5 miles of shoreline, and 25 miles of trails on 22 islands.
Here are a few of our 2024 highlights:
CADY MOUNTAIN PRESERVE ADDITION: CONNECTING PEOPLE AND WILDLIFE
San Juan Island
The newly constructed trailhead along Three Corner Lake Road on San Juan Island opens the door for the public to enjoy the stunning 142-acre Cady Mountain Addition. Visitors can now explore a diverse landscape of moss-covered rocky balds, sweeping grasslands, ephemeral streams, pocket wetlands, and unique forest communities, including a rare pairing usually only found in Alaska—Douglas fir and Alaska oniongrass.
This recent addition expands the protected footprint of the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank’s Cady Mountain Preserve to over 468 contiguous acres. When combined with the adjacent San Juan Island National Historical Park, this area now encompasses more than 850 acres of protected land, all interconnected by a multi-use path.
The acquisition of the Cady Mountain Preserve Addition and its conservation easement has been a long time in the making. The marathon-like pace to this finish line underscores the unique partnership between the Preservation Trust and the Conservation Land Bank. With the land now in public ownership and the conservation easement held by the Preservation Trust, we are reminded that such projects thrive through collaboration.
We could not do these projects alone. But together, and with you, we continue to create connections for people and wildlife. A heartfelt thank-you to our 50 generous donors, whose combined contributions of over $500,000 made the Cady Mountain Preserve Addition a success!
THE WINKLER PRESERVE: A LEGACY REALIZED
Guemes Island
The Preservation Trust’s conservation footprint expanded on the east side of Guemes Island this year to include an additional 6.4 acres and 415 feet of protected shoreline thanks to the foresight and generosity of Helen Winkler.
Helen, alongside her late partner Robert Grimm, shared a love and long-term vision for the protection of this place. Their conservation journey began in 2007 when they each donated conservation easements on their adjoining properties to the Preservation Trust, with the intent to later donate the parcels in their entirety. In 2016, Robert took that next significant step by donating the Grimm Preserve to the Preservation Trust. Earlier this year, Helen followed suit, ensuring that their shared vision of conservation would be realized.
The newly established Winkler Preserve now connects with the existing Grimm Preserve, creating a contiguous 12.5-acre expanse of protected land. Thanks to Helen and Robert’s combined love of Guemes Island, a diverse array of ecosystems are protected in perpetuity, including alder shrub wetlands, rocky bales, thriving stands of Douglas fir, Western red cedar, Western hemlock, and big leaf maple.
The Preservation Trust is honored to care for the Winkler and Grimm Preserves, ensuring that the vibrant life nestled within this landscape thrives for years to come.
WISE DECISIONS AT WISEACRES
San Juan Island
“Do you want to go down to Jurassic Park?” That’s how the Gubelman family describes a lush ravine at Wiseacres, their property on San Juan Island.
The family first set roots on the island during the 1850s. A century and a half later, in 2001, Gretchen Gubelman purchased Wiseacres, where she lives with her son Beau and daughter-in-law Holly. The property name originates from Beau’s grandmother, who was a schoolteacher. When her students acted up, she called them “wiseacres,” as a kid-friendly way of saying “wise-a**.” The double entendre stuck.
Over the years, Gretchen and Beau have gained a deep appreciation for their pocket of San Juan Island, which prompted them to conserve part of Wiseacres forever. This August, they donated a 15.8-acre conservation easement to the Preservation Trust. The new easement permanently protects an intact upland forest rich with fungi, prehistoric ferns, towering Douglas firs, and the babbling sound of False Bay Creek.
Few perennially flowing streams remain in the islands, but False Bay Creek is one of them. The freshwater stream is at risk of significant ecological threat should additional logging activity take place around it in the future. Historically, the waterway has been the site of salmon spawning, but deforestation over the years has degraded that ability. The Gubelman’s decision to place a conservation easement on Wiseacres will have lasting positive effects for San Juan Island’s water quality and riparian species.
“This is the only place in the world that I have the power to protect,” Gretchen says. “We’ve got to preserve what we have left and start thinking about how our short-term decisions have long-term impacts.”
We’re grateful for Gretchen and Beau’s wise foresight in choosing to conserve a portion of False Bay Creek for all the beings—humans and otherwise—that will rely on it forever.
CARE for Island Land
By the end of the year, our Stewardship staff will have upheld the “middle C” of our mission by completing their annual monitoring of SJPT’s 74 owned preserves and 325 conservation easements.
WHAT A DAM SITE!
The Preservation Trust’s JB Farm Preserve on Orcas Island has been the site of significant riparian restoration this year. In March, SJPT staff and the Islands Conservation Corps (ICC) planted more than 400 saplings and shrubs along the Crow Valley Creek corridor.
After the saplings enjoyed a growth spurt over the summer, restoration continued in September when SJPT and ICC returned to install seven artificial beaver dam analogs (BDAs) within the creek, hoping to attract wandering beavers.
But hang on, what is a beaver dam analog?
BDAs are crafted from wooden posts on site, pounded into the creek bed, and woven together with organic material to retain water pools—mimicking the effects of beaver-made dams.
Beavers are not only a keystone species; they’re also expert wetland engineers whose dams are essential for riparian restoration and wildfire mitigation. The few remaining beaver across the islands prompted the Preservation Trust to restore waterways that could support them. One way of doing that is to create features that they appreciate: deeper water pools for protection from predators, and adequate food with willow tree plantings.
The addition of 400 saplings and seven BDAs is an impressive sight. But our team is eagerly imagining the restored wetland area decades from now, where it could contain an expanded forest, meandering creek channels, pools of clean water from beaver activity, and a thriving array of insects, birds, amphibians, small mammals, and spawning salmon.
WE’RE WORKING ON THE PRAIRIE
Last spring, the Preservation Trust was awarded a $75,000 grant by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct a large pasture-to-prairie habitat conversion at the Phelps Preserve in lower San Juan Valley. While the purpose of the grant is to greatly expand suitable habitat for the critically endangered Island Marble butterfly (IMB), the restoration work will also be of great benefit to many other pollinators and prairie species.
A fully restored prairie habitat won’t happen overnight, but the long-term vision is to create a grassland dotted with native wildflowers growing alongside the field mustard that serves as the IMB’s primary host plant. The eventual future of this prairie will provide critical resources for all our vital pollinators in an area that was formerly devoid of any nectar-gathering or breeding opportunities.
The first stages of meeting this goal are now underway, with weed-control treatments in progress. The Preservation Trust is sub-contracting with the Ecostudies Institute, a nonprofit ecological consulting and restoration organization that has had success with similar prairie restoration efforts in south Puget Sound and Whidbey Island.
The 20-acre Phelps Preserve is the site of numerous efforts to return biodiversity and function back to lower San Juan Valley. Western bluebird nest boxes have hosted bluebirds, dozens of Garry oak trees are now planted and inching skyward, and the preserve is home to a previously established Island Marble butterfly habitat patch, which attracted its first IMB this past May. SEEING THE FOREST THROUGH THE TREES
Some forested areas in the San Juans are healthy and teeming with diverse life. But in other areas, trees are overcrowded. These densely populated forests (known in the forestry business as “dog hairs”) often lack a healthy canopy and contain dark understories with little to no vegetation for wildlife habitat and clusters of dry branches that pose a significant wildfire risk.
To restore the health and function of these forest systems, our Stewardship Department has been working on tree- thinning projects, which help lessen the competition among trees and shrubs for water, nutrients, and sunlight. This year, SJPT land stewards and the Islands Conservation Corps (ICC) spent several days thinning at the Beecher and Hunter Preserves on Lopez and San Juan Islands.
At both preserves, many of the larger logs were retained to decompose and simulate woody debris, providing homes for insects, fungi, and small animals.
The smaller branches at the Beecher Preserve were chipped and spread along the trails to enhance hiker walkways and return nutrients to the forest floor. At the Hunter Preserve, similar-sized materials were gathered into piles, carefully burned to create biochar, and spread across thinned areas to enrich the soil for understory growth.
These newly thinned areas will help foster productive forest growth, with the added benefit of greater carbon capture abilities and wildfire resilience among the trees.
CONNECT People and Land
LIFELONG LEARNING
The Marilyn and Fred Ellis Preserve on Shaw Island was once again the site of many community education and engagement opportunities this year. Students young and old, from far and wide, attended free classes that spanned a broad range of ecological, artistic, and historical subjects.
Ecologists, biologists, authors, botanists, and other special guests joined SJPT Curator and Interpretive Specialist Ruthie Dougherty to host a variety of classes at the preserve. Botanist Peter Zika contrasted the island-defining Salish Sea with the vital wetlands and freshwater systems of the San Juan Islands. Sally Vongasthorn merged art and science with a session on how to make prints using local botanicals. Ecologist Christina Mitchell and biologist Owen Cass took visitors on an insect crawl, a walk to discover the diverse critters found in the islands.
From imagining life as a homesteader to making intertidal discoveries, the buzz of creativity, learning, sharing, and connecting at the Marilyn and Fred Ellis Preserve offers experiences for everyone.
If you weren’t able to make it to any events or field classes in 2024, be sure to look out for programming posted throughout 2025 by visiting sjpt.org/events.
PASSING IT ON
The Preservation Trust’s K-12 education offerings continue to inspire the next generation of conservationists. Here are some of our 2024 highlights with youth across the islands:
- SJPT’s Education Specialist, Liz Doane, led outdoor experiences through our Learning Landscapes program for over 95 students at Spring Street International School and Orcas Island School District.
- With support from SJPT’s land stewards, Liz also arranged 11 service-learning outings for 39 Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) crew members, who worked to steward SJPT-protected lands across Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan Islands.
- The Preservation Trust, Conservation District, and Lopez Island Historical Society hosted an open house to celebrate the accomplishments of 13 Lopez YCC participants. The community gathered to learn about the young ecologists’ projects, including their phenology study sites. These new outdoor plots will now be the focus of ongoing biological observations conducted year-round by YCC.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE (OF VOLUNTEERS)
Over 190 dedicated volunteers gave 1,026 hours of their time this year to support our mission across nine islands! Whether planting Garry oaks, monitoring Western bluebird nest boxes, pulling weeds, sowing seeds, or assisting with office tasks, these are just some of the many ways in which volunteers uplifted our work in 2024.
Looking back on everything we accomplished together, we are so grateful to have this supportive community around us. Thank you to our “village” of volunteers—our work is only possible because of you!
THANK YOU
