A Letter from Angela
As the mother of two girls who were born in Hawaii, I was apprehensive about transplanting them, at the tender ages of 8 and 13, to another group of islands that were practically in Canada. Predictably, the transition has not been without challenges since we moved here from Kauai almost two years ago.
In spite of the challenges, I’ve found it incredibly heartening to watch my daughters adapt to and embrace (sometimes literally) the trees, wildlife, and unspoiled shorelines of their new island home.
My husband, Adam, has adapted, too—exchanging his surfboard for a standup paddle board. Whenever weather and time permit, he takes our younger daughter and his board to a quiet bay. She kneels on the front of the board while he paddles in a big, slow circuit near the shoreline.
Next thing I know, she bursts into the house and shouts, “Mama, guess what we saw!” Then, with dramatic flourish, she tells me about that day’s special wonder—whether it’s a beached jellyfish, a purple sea star, or a flowing school of forage fish shimmering in the clear, greenish water.
In those moments, I’m reminded of the sense of freedom and adventure I felt at her age, when my brother and I ventured beyond the sidewalks of Tacoma, where we grew up, to explore wooded trails and driftwood-strewn beaches in the South Sound area. These are the formative experiences of connecting with nature that lie at the root of my love of the natural world and passion for conservation. One of the biggest joys of parenthood for both Adam and me has been watching our daughters form this same kind of bond with the natural world here in the San Juans.
It’s because of your support that the Preservation Trust has helped to preserve and protect so many places in these islands where this is possible. Places where kids and adults alike can forge and deepen life-sustaining connections with nature. And today, as climate change places increasing strains on the ecosystems underpinning the beauty around us, it has never been more important that we, together, continue to conserve and protect what we love about this place. So it’s with a growing sense of urgency that we’ve made big plans this year to keep up the pace of island conservation—plans we can only fulfill with your continued faithful support.

CONSERVATION
BEAVERTON VALLEY PRESERVE
The San Juan Preservation Trust, San Juan County Land Bank, and a very generous major donor teamed up to acquire 325 acres of Beaverton marsh and the adjacent wooded ridgeline on San Juan Island. The Preservation Trust launched a $1.2 million campaign to help fund the $2.6 million purchase of the wetland, which is the largest freshwater marsh in San Juan County. Public access from Linde Park in Friday Harbor is planned, and the area’s rural character and scenic views are now protected forever. This newest acquisition joins more than 175 acres in Beaverton Marsh already protected by the Preservation Trust and the County Land Bank, for a total of 500 acres of conservation land in one of our top-priority areas.

MIDDLEWOOD CONSERVATION EASEMENT
Travelers along Cattle Point Road on San Juan Island will continue to enjoy a rural landscape, woods, pond, and trail access thanks to Jennifer Woodbridge’s donation of a conservation easement on a 30-acre parcel at the corner of Cattle Point Road and Jensen Bay Road. The County Land Bank will own title to the property, while the Preservation Trust holds the conservation easement. Previously owned by the late Ted Middleton, who was a major supporter of the Preservation Trust, the property has been dubbed “MiddleWood” in recognition of both Ted Middleton and Jennifer Woodbridge.
MORE NEW PRESERVES AND EASEMENTS
Several new acquisitions are in their final stages (with recording possible by year’s end), including a donation of six acres of forested land on Orcas Island, purchase of a high-priority 24-acre wetland parcel on Lopez Island, and acquisition of a 27-acre conservation easement with 800+ feet of shoreline on Lopez Island.
GIFTS OF TRADE LANDS
In 2019 the Preservation Trust received two generous gifts from the sale of two waterfront homes, one on Orcas Island and one on Lopez Island, totaling nearly $1.5 million dollars. One of these was a gift from longtime supporter Malcolm Goodfellow, with sale proceeds split between SJPT and the SeaDoc Society; the other was a bequest.
SUTTER PRESERVE CONSERVATION EASEMENT
The Preservation Trust has protected the conservation values, including scenic views and opportunities for farming, on the Sutter Preserve (Lopez Island) with a conservation easement and sale of the 10-acre parcel to an island farmer.
Shoreline Conservation in the San Juans
In March, the Washington Association of Land Trusts (WALT) Shoreline Conservation Collaborative (SCC) released a report summarizing shoreline conservation in Puget Sound over the past four years. Quoting from the report: “The San Juan Islands lead all other areas with over 47,000 feet of shoreline conserved since 2014; almost a third of all shoreline conserved since the SCC was founded.” To date, the Preservation Trust has protected more than 48 miles of shoreline, the most shoreline of any land trust in the Puget Sound region. Still, with a total of 408 miles of shoreline in San Juan County, there’s plenty more to protect—and we’re not resting on our laurels.

ISLAND MARBLE BUTTERFLY
This past May, a lone Island Marble Butterfly, one of the rarest insects in our state, was seen flitting among yellow field mustard blooms in one of several habitat patches that Preservation Trust staff created in hopes of expanding the population outside of American Camp on San Juan Island.
While this sighting was significant in and of itself, the butterfly—which turned out to be female—laid eggs in our habitat patch. Many of the resulting caterpillars survived, and are now overwintering as chrysalises. Our fingers are crossed that they will emerge as adult butterflies in the spring, raising hopes for this beauty’s permanent return to more of our island grasslands.
MARILYN AND FRED ELLIS PRESERVE
The past year was again a busy one at the Ellis preserve. We invited the public to several Open Preserve Days, built a deer exclosure to protect wildflowers, removed invasive plants, planted trees, and started work on a trail system. We also hosted an artists-in-residence program, a group of high-school campers doing a service trip, and a Youth Conservation Corps troop.
Before much of that could happen, however, the preserve needed a number of infrastructure upgrades, including a new water system, fixes to the plumbing and electrical systems, and construction of a floor over an indoor pool (to make the space more usable). Much of this work is invisible, but will help sustain the property for decades.
The preserve came to us with extensive household and collectible items, and much effort has gone into determining which of these items the Preservation Trust should keep to help tell the story of the preserve, and which items could be sold to help raise preserve stewardship funds. Many of the antiques and collectibles were sold via an online auction in June. We are making good progress on our plans to expand public access. Starting next spring there will be a year-round accessible trail. Also starting in the spring, the Tharald Homestead area of the preserve will be open one day a week; guided tours will be offered on open days.
ISLAND STEWARD
The Preservation Trust finally made the leap into boat ownership this year, purchasing a 23-foot aluminum skiff with a walkaround pilothouse. Previously, the stewardship staff has relied on water taxis, generous friends, occasional airplane rides, or their own boats and kayaks to get around to preserves and easements on non-ferry-served islands. Christened Island Steward after a vote by staff and trustees, the new boat is based on Vendovi Island, from which she transports caretakers, work crews, and supplies back and forth to the mainland. She’s also deployed for monitoring trips, volunteer work parties, and staff training. One especially important opportunity was to participate in a training exercise with the Island Oil Spill Association, during which SJPT staff learned how to respond to spills and to use the boat to help move containment booms.
