IT’S TIME TO ROLL UP OUR SLEEVES
A Letter From Angela

“Hope is a verb with its shirtsleeves rolled up,” is a quote I have been ruminating on from an environmental thinker I admire, David Orr. In times like these, this sentiment resonates deeply. Turning hope into local action has never been more urgent, and here in the San Juan Islands, the ability to effect meaningful change is right at our fingertips.
At the Preservation Trust, we are rooted in the belief that local conservation, supported by a committed community, is the key to lasting impact. By protecting land, restoring habitats, and advocating for sustainable practices, we’re creating a future that will secure our region’s unique biodiversity and vital ecosystems for generations to come.

Introducing Our New Board Candidate
Jamie Stephens is running this year to fill an open seat on the Preservation Trust’s Board of Directors. He is running unopposed for a three-year term. To see all candidates, including incumbents running for re-election, visit sjpt.org/election2025.
Jamie Stephens
In 1996, Jamie and his wife, Lauren, bought a small business on Lopez Island and relocated there with their family. Jamie quickly became an active volunteer, contributing to numerous community nonprofits dedicated to supporting housing and families.
As the San Juan Islands community grew, Jamie saw the need to balance growth with conservation and preservation. He addressed this need by running for office and serving on the San Juan County Council for 12 years.
During his tenure, he oversaw major updates and approvals of the County’s land use and planning documents (i.e., Shoreline Management Plan, Critical Areas Ordinances, and a Comprehensive Plan). As a council member, he took the lead on environmental issues, serving on the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Council, Governor Inslee’s Orcas Task Force, and Puget Sound Partnership Ecosystem Coordination Board.
Jamie was part of a volunteer group that lobbied for the establishment of the San Juan Islands National Monument, established in 2013, and has served on its Citizen Advisory Board. Jamie currently serves on the Shorelines Hearings Board as a county representative, a Governor’s appointee to the Northwest Straits Commission, and chair of the Islands Oil Spill Association.
He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and executive business classes at the Wharton School. He and Lauren own a property management business.
