SJPT stewardship staff and volunteers tending to a riparian restoration area at JB Farm Preserve on Orcas Island | Staff archive
Your annual membership in the Preservation Trust ensures that even more of the places we all treasure will be conserved and cared for in the year ahead. The ethos of our land conservation work is truly community-based, and we can only do it with you by our side. Here are just some of the ways you are helping to advance our mission through your support:
CONSERVE:
So far in 2024, we’ve partnered with private landowners to protect 158 acres across two properties on San Juan Island. This year has also seen the celebratory opening of public trails at the Cady Mountain and Beaverton Marsh Preserves on San Juan Island, and the new North Shore Preserve on Orcas Island will open to the public on September 28. Together, these efforts form a network of conservation that helps safeguard the vital natural systems of the San Juans.
CARE:
From shoreline projects that support forage fish to prairie or wetland restoration efforts, our staff and volunteers care for the lands that have been entrusted to us. Recent stewardship projects at JB Farm Preserve on Orcas Island have included major efforts to restore the riparian zone along Crow Valley Creek to enhance water quality, increase biodiversity, and (hopefully) restore the creek’s ability to provide habitat for spawning salmon.
CONNECT:
Our educational outreach continues to expand and provide impactful outdoor experiences for youth across the islands, inspiring the next generation of conservationists. Local teens recently worked alongside our staff at our preserves on Lopez, San Juan, Orcas, and Shaw Islands to restore habitat and improve trails while absorbing environmental education lessons.
Renewing your membership in the Preservation Trust makes a difference to the places, people, and wildlife that call these islands home, and we are deeply grateful for your partnership!
