The homestead of early settler Theodore Tharald is at the center of the Preservation Trust’s Ellis Preserve on Shaw Island. Built in 1883, the original log house is on the National Historic Register and stands as an example of the skill and hard work required to build a life in the islands in the mid-19th century.

We’re pleased to offer guided tours of the homestead, sharing what we know of a long and rich history of connection to place, industriousness, and the ultimate gift of an extraordinary conservation legacy. Always free and typically by appointment only, this homestead tour is open to anybody without prior registration:

Date: Saturday, September 10, 1pm–3pm

Directions: From the Shaw Ferry Landing, follow Blind Bay Rd. as it curves to the right around Blind Bay. Keep going straight until you come to the intersection of Blind Bay Rd. and Hoffman Cove Rd. (2.3 miles from the ferry landing). Turn left and proceed approximately 0.8 miles on Hoffman Cove Rd. Look for the preserve gate and driveway on the right. Follow signs to parking area.
