North Shore Preserve

Orcas Island

Year Protected: 2022

Land Protected: 58 acres

Shoreline Protected: 1,850 feet

Public Benefits: Undeveloped shoreline

In 2022, the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank and the San Juan Preservation Trust partnered to purchase this 58-acre property. In addition to forested uplands, it includes tidelands and over 1,850 feet of shoreline. In public ownership, the uplands will continue to support diverse plants, fungi, mammals, birds, amphibians and insects, while eelgrass and forage fish vital to salmon and other marine life will continue to thrive in the nearshore area.

The San Juan Preservation Trust contributed $3.8 million to the project, which it raised through a grant from the Washington State Office of Recreation and Conservation, combined with gifts from generous private donors.

The Conservation Land Bank owns and manages the Preserve, while the Preservation Trust holds a conservation easement to ensure it will remain a publicly accessible nature preserve in perpetuity.

The North Shore Preserve is open to the public. Please enjoy the Preserve’s natural beauty and help keep it unspoiled and litter free.
