Busy as Beavers at Crow Valley Creek

The San Juan Preservation Trust and Islands Conservation Corps (ICC) were hard at work last month to create a man-made beaver habitat on Orcas Island, with hopes that beavers will take notice and eventually move in.

The presence of scattered remaining beavers across the archipelago is what prompted the Preservation Trust to support them by installing seven beaver dam analogs along Crow Valley Creek. Watch the video here.

The North Shore Preserve is Open!

The San Juan Preservation Trust and the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank celebrated the opening of the North Shore Preserve last month. The 58-acre property, with its 1,850-foot stretch of shoreline in one of the islands’ highest-priority regions for salmon recovery, provides much-needed public shoreline access for Orcas Island.

Watch the celebratory recap video above and visit the North Shore Preserve for yourself anytime between dawn and dusk!

Wise Decisions at Wiseacres

This August, the Gubelman family donated a conservation easement to the Preservation Trust covering 15.8 acres at Wiseacres, their property on San Juan Island. The new easement permanently protects an intact upland forest rich with fungi, prehistoric ferns, towering Douglas firs, and the babbling sound of False Bay Creek.
