A longtime member of the San Juan Preservation Trust staff has retired after eight years of service. Director of Communications and Outreach Craig Canine first joined the Preservation Trust in 2016, following a 25-year career as a magazine journalist.

During his SJPT tenure, Craig led our recent logo and brand redesign, launched multiple video projects—including the COVID-era “Just a Minute” series—and crafted countless poignant stories that depicted the inner happenings behind Preservation Trust conservation projects. His knack for capturing the authentic voices—and sometimes whimsical natural surroundings—of landowners, their properties, and their partnerships with the Preservation Trust, will be sorely missed.

“As the effects of global warming become ever more dire, acting locally to protect what’s left of species diversity and climate resilience has never been more urgent.” Craig says. “Playing a small role in doing so over the past eight years with wonderful colleagues and supporters at SJPT has been the privilege of a lifetime.”

Angela Anderson, Executive Director of SJPT, reflects on Craig’s departure with admiration: “The Preservation Trust has been so fortunate to have had Craig’s dedication and expertise as a staff member since 2016. He has been a cherished partner and friend to many at our organization and throughout the broader island community. We will miss his keen brevity, good-natured wit, and deep passion for our mission.”

While pondering his next chapter, Craig remarks: “A few things I’m looking forward to in retirement are more time to catch up on deferred maintenance of our house and (wooden) boat, and more freedom to explore our amazing region by both land and sea.”

Craig’s career expertise and many accomplishments proved to be invaluable while on the job with the Preservation Trust and have left an indelible mark on the organization. Please join us in congratulating Craig Canine on his retirement!
