The homestead of early settler Theodore Tharald is at the center of the Trust’s Ellis Preserve on Shaw Island. Built in 1883, the original log house is on the National Historic Register and stands as an example of the skill and hard work required to build a life in the islands in the mid-19th century.

The original log house built in the late 19th century by Theodore Tharald.

The Preservation Trust is pleased to offer guided tours of the homestead, sharing what we know of a long and rich history of connection to place, industriousness, and the ultimate gift of an extraordinary conservation legacy. Always free and typically by appointment only, the following homestead tours are open to anybody without any prior registration.
