Eight Ways You Can Help

In October, I traveled to Pittsburgh with three other Preservation Trust staff members to attend Rally, the national land conservation conference held annually by the Land Trust Alliance. This year, as always, I returned home from Rally with a few memorable quotes jotted in my notebook.

Two of those quotes seem especially relevant to where I am in my life, and also to where the San Juan Preservation Trust is in its 40-year history—both of us navigating through a time of transition and formative growth. Here’s the first:

“If we want things to stay as they are, things will have to change.”

Keynote speaker Grant Oliphant flashed this quote on a big screen. We live, he said, in a moment when if we want things to stay the same—if we truly want the earth to remain a place where our children can enjoy something like the lives we have enjoyed—then we need to begin thinking differently about how we deal with some big changes taking place all around us.

What are these changes for us, in the San Juan Islands? The top three, as I see it, are:

  • A changing climate. Hotter, drier summers point towards increased risk of wildfires, more pressure from invasive species, and degraded waterways and loss of biodiversity.
  • Changing demographics. We must try harder to engage the next generations of island conservationists and connect a more diverse cross-section of islanders to our conserved lands and to nature.
  • Changing resource demands. As we protect more island landscapes, we face sharply increasing demands on our stewardship resources—that is, on our ability to care for the land under our protection in perpetuity.

Our board and staff members are grappling with these and other areas of change as we formulate a new strategic plan that will chart the Preservation Trust’s path into its next 40 years. We’ve made progress, but are taking the time we need to ensure that all voices are heard.

My second favorite quote from this year’s Rally:

“If you see a turtle on a fencepost, he didn’t get there by himself.”

This quote, spoken by an award recipient from Montana, has personal resonance for me. Having moved with my family from Kauai last February to this very different, and yet also surprisingly similar island archipelago, I feel a bit like that turtle on a fencepost. I’ve been tremendously lifted up by the warm and encouraging acceptance with which you have welcomed us to our new island home. I am so excited as, together, we set our sights on the road ahead.

CONSERVATION

ELLIS FAMILY PRESERVE

On the last day of 2017, a closing took place that represents the largest donation (in terms of appraised value) that the Preservation Trust has ever received. The newly created Ellis Family Preserve spans 330 acres and includes more than a mile of natural shoreline on southwestern Shaw Island, bordering Parks and Hicks Bays. We welcomed more than 150 SJPT members and friends to tour and enjoy this truly exceptional new preserve in July for our Summer Social. (Read more about the Ellis Family Preserve below, under Stewardship.)

LOPEZ ISLAND

Lopez landowners Stanley and Kip Greenthal very generously donated a conservation easement protecting 25 acres on Pavey Hill, a prominent rise near Mud Bay. We also received an outright donation of 15 acres of undeveloped land in Red Wing Hollow, also at the south end of Lopez, near Hunter Bay and Lopez Hill.

ORCAS ISLAND

We welcomed the donation of 47 acres of mixed forest and wetland on Orcas Island’s Mount Woolard from two wonderfully generous donors. They envision the property as a forever-wild preserve with limited access for the enjoyment and study of nature. They also hope it might catalyze a neighborhood conservation effort among surrounding landowners. Indeed, neighbors of the new Mount Woolard Marsh Preserve have already mobilized by raising stewardship funds and volunteering to serve as caretakers of this beloved local place.

SAN JUAN ISLAND

Three years ago, the Preservation Trust and the San Juan County Land Bank purchased the Zylstra Lake property. We spent the next two years applying—and waiting—for federal and state grants that would allow us to pay off the seller’s note. We’re pleased to report that the Land Bank took title to the 283-acre preserve last year and, this past spring, SJPT accepted a conservation easement on the property. (Whew!) The Land Bank will develop a final management plan starting late in 2019.

STUART ISLAND

The Preservation Trust accepted the donation of a conservation easement protecting 7.7 acres, including 1,400 feet of rocky shoreline, near the entrance of Reid Harbor on Sunny Point. “We made this donation in memory of my late husband, Dr. Jack Ciliberti,” said Molly Ciliberti, the owner of this highly visible and scenic property. “Our family is proud to donate and hope others will follow our example.” This conservation easement contributes to the more-than 200 acres and 14,000 feet of shoreline already conserved around Reid Harbor and nearby uplands.

STEWARDSHIP

ELLIS FAMILY PRESERVE

Along with its magnificent forests, fields, shoreline, and pond, the 330-acre Ellis property (donated on the last day of 2017, as noted earlier under Conservation) includes a great deal of infrastructure that we will need to care for: an historic log cabin, a modern residence, an indoor lap pool, a water tower, a dock, a garage with a small apartment, a library building, a hay barn, a cemetery, and other outbuildings.

Cleaning out and assessing the condition of all these buildings (plus a plethora of tools, tractors, and more equipment) is still in progress; much updating and deferred maintenance work remains to be done.

Our long-term management plan includes allowing limited public access and creating a trail system. In collaboration with the Shaw Island community, we look forward to shaping and stewarding this amazing conservation legacy of the Ellis family for current and future generations. It will take time to define and realize a vision that is worthy of this extraordinary gift.

BLUEBIRDS

Overall the 2018 Western Bluebird Restoration Project season was very productive. We had 13 active territories on San Juan Island, with more than 30 adult birds and 70+ nestlings that were banded for future population monitoring. The weather was favorable for the birds this year, but predator control (raccoons and house sparrows being the biggest threats) posed an ongoing challenge. Stewardship Manager Kathleen Foley, with capable help from our 2018 seasonal bluebird tech, Genevieve Shank, began work towards transitioning this project to a community-based, all-volunteer monitoring effort in 2019.

VENDOVI ISLAND PRESERVE

Vendovi was once again a busy place this year, attracting about 2,500 visitors during the 2018 season. The island hosted three outings for SJPT members and continues to be used by students of many ages as an outdoor lab for research and education. We also made some major facility upgrades: New interpretive and regulatory signage went up in the spring, and the caretaker residence got a new metal roof and new floors. We expect that these improvements will serve us well for decades.

GRASSLANDS

One of our newest conservation partners is the Center for Natural Lands Management (CNLM), an LTA-accredited conservation nonprofit that has deep expertise in managing Pacific Northwest prairie and oak grasslands. We have started working with them and other grasslands managers in the San Juans (the County Land Bank, WA State Parks, National Parks, and San Juan Islands National Monument) to find strategies to save our disappearing prairies—one of the rarest ecosystems in the country. These partners have been conducting assessments on representative properties (including SJPT’s Kimball Preserve on Decatur Island and Bitte Baer Preserve on Waldron). CNLM is helping us craft management strategies that will help us work toward healthier grasslands, which provide habitat for threatened and endangered species such as the Pacific bluebird, Golden paintbrush, and island marble butterfly.
