Waunch Conservation Easement
Orcas Island
Year Protected: 1987
Land Protected: 41 acres
Public Benefits: Forest, wildlife habitat
A portion of the top of Mt. Woolard on Orcas Island was permanently protected in 1987 with the donation of a conservation easement by Bob and Marsha Waunch.
Mt. Woolard, easily seen from the waters of Harney Channel, Blind Bay, and East Sound, is a mosaic of forest and open meadows that host a variety of wildlife. The conserved property includes a broad open wildflower meadow, which can be seen for miles. Both the meadows and the forest will be managed for the enhancement of wildlife, true to the initial vision of the Waunch family.
