Okay, so the solar eclipse on August 21 will not be full in the San Juan Islands—but 88 percent of totality isn’t bad! In the islands, the eclipse will start around 9:10 am and last until about 11:40 am, with the maximum occurring around 10:20 am. “Read more” for our suggestions on how to enjoy this natural phenomenon in some of our islands’ most beautiful natural settings, far from city lights.

Suggestions for viewing the eclipse in the San Juans:

• San Juan Island National Historical Park will be hosting an Eclipse Viewing Party at South Beach (map) from 8:30 a.m. to noon where you can safely view the sun with solar-viewing glasses or telescopes with solar filters.

• If you can’t make the party, here are a few places on SJPT (and, in some cases, County Land Bank) preserved lands that should offer a good view—just remember to bring your own viewing glasses! And don’t forget to pack sunscreen, plenty of water, and a mid-morning snack.

  • Vendovi Island – Paintbrush Point (map)
  • Turtlehead Preserve – summit (map)
  • Turtleback Preserve – Morning Ridge Trail or Ship Peak (map)
  • Guemes Island – Peach Preserve (map)
  • Mount Grant – summit  (map)
