YEAR IN REVIEW
A Letter from Tim
It was late 2002, and I had just settled into a chair across from Ted Grossman in his cramped office in Eastsound. Ted had served for decades as the editor of The Islands’ Sounder, Orcas Island’s newspaper, and he wanted to interview me after learning I was the new executive director of the Preservation Trust. With his rasping voice and thick white hair angled high above his head, Ted was a well-known fixture on Orcas.
“So tell me,” he began the interview. “What’s it like to run the largest nonprofit in the San Juan Islands that no one has ever heard of?”
I wasn’t sure if Ted’s opening salvo was intended to convey his admiration or his ambivalence, but I didn’t take it very well.
Fast-forward 15 years, and I wish I could take another swing at that question. I would admit that the Preservation Trust does do things quietly, often without notice or fanfare, and I believe that approach has served us well. We purposely stay out of politics, and we are very judicious about injecting
ourselves into public discourse or litigation. As our government partners interact with elected officials and the press in their open meetings, we are (quietly) at work in another room structuring the deals and raising the money. For every splashy community fundraising campaign we lead,
we (quietly) complete dozens of other projects with visionary landowners and donors—the true heroes in our story.
While quiet accomplishment may not attract attention from newspaper editors, we have somehow attracted you to this mission. And you are all we really need. Thanks to your vision, trust, and support, we’ve done—quietly and together—more for our beloved San Juans than any of us could have ever dreamed. Today we own more island real estate than anyone else (private or public), and we are ranked 29th out of more than 1,300 land conservation groups in the country as measured in number of properties protected. Not bad for such a meek little outfit, right?
I’ve never fully recovered from that interview in Ted Grossman’s office. But as I wrap up my final year as the executive director of this organization, I can finally admit that Ted was (mostly) right: The San Juan Preservation Trust is indeed the largest nonprofit in these islands that no one—except for you and your fellow 3,000+ supporting Preservation Trust members—has ever heard of. And that’s just fine by me.

CONSERVATION
At the end of 2016, we reported to you that we were fundraising to purchase three extraordinary properties.
We have good news to report on all three of them:
MOUNT GRANT
With the San Juan County Land Bank’s $1.5 million contribution, the Preservation Trust went out to the island community to raise an additional $2.7 million (total project goal: $4.2 million). While pledges are still being collected, we were able to retire our seller-financed loan in September and have created a stewardship fund to care for the property. The County Land Bank is now overseeing public access to the property and developing a management plan.
ZYLSTRA LAKE
After selling off a 30-acre portion of this 313-acre property in late 2016, we were thrilled to learn last January that the Zylstra Lake project was awarded a $1 million federal coastal wetlands grant (thanks to indispensable support from the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Labs). A high ranking in the Washington Wildlife & Recreation Program’s Water Access category put Zylstra in a strong position to receive state funding for an additional $1.1 million grant, subject only to the state legislature’s approval of a capital budget. Now we wait. As the lack of a state capital budget has put an indefinite hold on the funding of this grant, the County Land Bank has offered to step up to bridge this timing gap and pay off the balance still outstanding on the seller’s note—a full year in advance. Not only will this provide the matching dollars needed to trigger funding of the federal Coastal Wetlands grant, but it will also eliminate a year’s worth of interest that the SJPT-Land Bank partnership would otherwise owe.
CAMPAIGN TO CONNECT THE HENRYS
Alarmed by the threat of a residential development that would have prohibited access across the Henry Island Isthmus (the crossbar in this H-shaped island), the Henry community approached the Preservation Trust in 2015 to help them purchase this 60+ acre property. A $1.95 million fundraising effort has been underway on Henry ever since. Many island residents have made two or more donations. A summer outreach effort at the Seattle Yacht Club, which owns an outstation on Henry, also generated a number of donations. With a little less than $100,000 to go, we are close to bringing this campaign to its successful conclusion.
NEW EASEMENTS AND PRESERVES
With over 320 conservation easements covering more than 15,000 acres, the Preservation Trust is responsible for one of the largest conservation easement programs in the country. In the past year we welcomed seven new conservation easements to our portfolio, including 66 acres on along Day Lake on Buck Mountain (Orcas Island), the spectacular tip of White Point (San Juan Island), a Quarter-mile of shoreline with forage fish spawning beaches on Lopez Island, and a 20-acre addition to a previously protected forest Parcel on Sinclair Island.
Another significant donation came to us on Henry Island’s Kellett Bluff, long recognized as one of our highest priorities for conservation. This 80-acre parcel includes approximately 3,000 feet of shoreline that fronts both Haro Strait and Open Bay. The Preservation Trust now holds a conservation easement that permanently protects this property, while the County Land Bank owns and manages the property for limited public access.
During this same period, four private landowners from Stuart, Guemes, Lopez, and Orcas islands made outright donations of land to the Preservation Trust. These properties will now be managed within our network of 80+ Preservation Trust-owned nature preserves located throughout the archipelago.
STEWARDSHIP
RETURN OF THE BUTTERFLIES
The Preservation Trust entered its second field season this year in our work with the National Park Service and other partners to aid the recovery of the Island Marble Butterfly. Fewer than 200 of these butterflies are known to exist, all of them in small patches of wildflower prairie at the American Camp National Historical Park, near the southern tip of San Juan Island. As they are concentrated in such a small area, a single harsh natural event could wipe out the entire species.
In a project designed to expand this rare butterfly’s tiny population, SJPT received funding from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2015 to create “safe patches.” These are areas outside of American Camp, but still within easy fluttering distance, where the host and nectaring plants that the butterfly needs throughout its life cycle could be grown in deer-proof plots.
With the help of many volunteers from the San Juan Islands Youth Conservation Corps and student groups from the islands and Seattle, we planted and cultivated several test plots on three protected properties (owned by the Land Bank and SJPT) in 2016. This year, two seasonal butterfly ecologists were hired to monitor the plots. We were excited last spring by the discovery of a few tiny Island Marble eggs in one of our safe patches. Though these eggs did not mature into larvae, their appearance was a positive sign that at least one enterprising female had ventured beyond the American Camp prairie in search of a new home for her offspring. We hope that more will follow her lead in 2018.
RESTORATION: A NEVERENDING STORY
Restoration of damaged or neglected land is a big part of our promise to care for our land in perpetuity. With lots of diligence and patience, we’re starting to see some exciting rewards. On our 1,600+ acre Turtleback Mountain Preserve on Orcas Island, we’ve been engaging the Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) to make annual, multi-week visits to control Scotch broom, blackberry, English holly, and other invasive plants. And on Jack Island, which was once almost completely choked with holly, English laurel and (worst of all) English Ivy, we are cleaning up the understory and reopening the forest canopy, where the ivy was once so thick that it blocked light from reaching plants on the forest floor. These battles, among many others, will continue for decades. But we’re making steady progress, and every once in a while we get a glimpse of the future as little havens for native plants, birds, and other wildlife species start to emerge where tenacious weeds once prevailed.
FOLLOWING THROUGH ON HENRY ISLAND
As our Campaign to Connect the Henrys on Henry Island continues, a great deal of work has gone into improving and expanding the trail system that crosses the isthmus connecting the two sides of this outer island. Walkers can now stroll across the isthmus, enjoy a driftwood-strewn beach and ecologically vibrant saltwater marsh, then ascend through forest dotted with old-growth trees to “the Knoll,” a sweet overlook on a grassy bald.
Many hands have pitched in to bring this trail system to fruition, including volunteer work groups marshalled from across the islands, Boy Scout troops, a hearing-impaired crew from Northwest Youth Corps, and a professionally trained group from the Washington Conservation Corps. This work, funded by campaign donors, represents just the first step in our promise to care for this diverse preserve in perpetuity.
