Two weeks from today is the first open house of the year for the Tharald Homestead at the Marilyn and Fred Ellis Preserve on Shaw Island!

The homestead of early settler Theodore Tharald is at the center of the Preservation Trust’s Ellis Preserve on Shaw Island. Built in 1883, the original log house is on the National Historic Register and is one of two intact homesteads left in the islands.

In addition to its rich natural environment, the Ellis Preserve encompasses a many-layered record of our region’s cultural history. The landscape contains evidence of Indigenous culture from long before European exploration and westward expansion, through the homestead and agricultural era, to the period of resource extraction and the emergence of tourism and development.

The Tharald Homestead provides a vantage point for considering those who came before us and their relationship to place. The homestead tour is an opportunity to learn more about the legacy we have inherited and ponder the one we will leave behind.

In addition to being able to schedule private guided tours, the following homestead tours are all free and are open to anybody without any prior registration, all running from 1:00pm to 2:30 on the 2024 dates below:

May 8, June 8, July 7, August 3, September 4

We hope to see you out there!

Everyday is Earth Day but it's good to have a day where we celebrate our planet even more!

Here's a beautiful video from a preserve on San Juan Island that our stewardship staff took earlier this month.

What a scene. What a place. What an ecosystem.

The shooting star wildflowers look amazing with the mighty oak tree in the background.

Happy Earth Day!

The Ihiya Biological Preserve is all tidied up and ready for summer!

It was a really fun day earlier this week as a group volunteers and SJPT staff wandered the entire trail system at this small but lush preserve near the center of San Juan Island.

We couldn't have asked for better weather and the wildflowers were out in full force, especially the fawn lilies that seem to grow and multiply every year.

Thanks to all that showed up to help us steward this lovely place.

What a day to be out and about in these incredible islands!
