Oysters are not my thing. But when my daughter announced that she wanted to celebrate her tenth birthday with family and friends at Westcott Bay Shellfish farm, I couldn’t suppress a proud smile.

The San Juan Preservation Trust has accomplished much in its 38 years, and the most recent statistics confirm that we are one of the most prolific land trusts in the country. Among 1,360 land trusts, only 28 others have protected more properties than we have. But the story of my daughter’s chosen birthday venue is an example of the type of community work the Preservation Trust is doing that will never be captured in these statistics.

SUMMER SOCIAL rocks crow valley

About 100 SJPT members and guests gathered at Jeff & Angie Johnson’s historic Crow Valley Farm (Orcas Island) on July 29 to enjoy great food, wine, music, and schmoozing. Special thanks to our hosts—and to our photographers, for capturing a few of the afternoon’s special moments.

Check out our photo gallery.

Tiptop league tops pt. disney

Last month, a (small) boatload of intrepid members of SJPT's Tiptop League embarked on a guided tour of Point Disney/Bitte Baer Preserve on Waldron Island. The steep climb to the 400-foot clifftop of Point Disney was rewarded by some of the best views in the islands, including sweeping vistas over Cowlitz Bay Preserve. Take a look at the great photos captured by Tiptop League member Steve Smith (aka Orcasart.com).

helping a close friend

If you have seen many issues of our Island Dispatch newsletter, or received our campaign mailings, or perused our website, then you have seen the magnificent—and generously donated—photographic work of Kurt Thorson. His images have captured the beauty of these islands more eloquently than all our words ever could. In early 2016, Kurt was diagnosed with ALS. Subsequent tests revealed overlapping conditions that have, together, led to a shocking loss of mobility and dexterity. We would like to help Kurt fight back.

hot spots for eclipse viewing

Okay, so the solar eclipse on August 21 will not be full in the San Juan Islands—but 88 percent of totality isn't bad! In the islands, the eclipse will start around 9:10 am and last until about 11:40 am, with the maximum occurring around 10:20 am. "Read more" for our suggestions on how to enjoy this natural phenomenon in some of our islands’ most beautiful natural settings, far from city lights.

“This shot was just one of those moments that revealed itself as I was moving around trying to find a position on the beach without getting my feet wet. As I shifted back and forth, I noticed the sun between the rocks. Then I crouched down for a better angle and tripped the shutter. I took it at the end of Blanchard Road on Orcas Island.” – Gene Nery

Gann Society member since: 2014 (SJPT member since 1987)

Place of residence: Crane Island

Favorite island place: "Too many to list! Any quiet morning on or near the water would count."

Quote: “When I first heard about the Preservation Trust, I knew it was the sort of organization that makes a difference, because many people with varied experience and resources can get involved. I especially value the ways SJPT has created varieties of public access, so everyone who cares to can enjoy natural places and understand what it takes to preserve them forever.”

The Gann Society

The Gann Society is a group of individuals who have notified us that they have provided for the San Juan Preservation Trust in their estate plans. Their planned giving will help protect the San Juan Islands forever.
