Charles Mottl Conservation Easement

Orcas Island

Year Protected: 1984

Land Protected: 17.6 acres

Public Benefits: Forest, wetlands

One of the very first conservation easements donated to the San Juan Preservation Trust came from Virginia and Charles Mottl of Orcas.  In 1984, they protected  17.6 acres on the southeast corner of Guthrie Cove and White Beach roads.

“The easement permanently prohibits residential, commercial or industrial use of the site,” explained Linda Krieger, executive director for the Trust at the time.  The property has biologically rich wetlands and is home to a large array of migratory and resident birds who will be able to continue their undisturbed habitation on the property in perpetuity.
