Understudied and often unnoticed, lichens are fascinating symbiotic pairings of fungi, algae and/or cyanobacteria that abound in a wide variety of forms and habitats. Join SJPT Land Steward and lichen enthusiast Rob Roy McGregor to discover common and iconic Northwest lichens found on the Marilyn and Fred Ellis Preserve on Shaw Island.

The focus will be on the major groups of lichens, their structure, and function, and characteristics used in identification. This walk will be on the Sylvan Loop trail, easy to moderate walking, some uneven footing, kneeling and bending. Hand lenses will be provided.
