We all watched, heartbroken, as the orca known as J35 (aka Tahlequah) carried her dead calf around the Salish Sea for more than two weeks. At the same time, ongoing efforts to save J35’s starving cousin J50 (Scarlet) have further highlighted the urgent plight of our Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKWs). Some of our members have recently asked us, “Is the Preservation Trust doing anything to help?”

Founded in 1979, the San Juan Preservation Trust turns 40 next year. As we approach this landmark, we will soon be asking for your help in charting our course for the next 40 years.
Watch your mailbox and/or email inbox early next month. We'll be sending out both a postcard and an email that invites members and community stakeholders to take an online survey.
We hope you'll make your voice heard by responding. You'll be helping to set the course for our efforts to preserve what you love about these islands for the next generation. Your invitation is coming soon.

The close of the 2018 breeding season marks the twelfth consecutive year of the San Juan Islands Western Bluebird Reintroduction Project. As a result of the collective efforts of SJPT employees and volunteers, 2018 has been the most successful breeding season in half a decade!

The rare island marble butterfly has completed its active field season. Flying adults that emerged this spring successfully mated, and the eggs and larvae produced have now transformed into tiny gray pupae that are overwintering in vegetation along the grasslands, dunes and saltwater lagoons at the south end of San Juan Island. A new year-long, miraculous life cycle has begun.

On July 28, more than 150 Preservation Trust members, friends, trustees, and staff gathered at the Ellis Family Preserve for a beautiful day of connecting with each other and with this wonderful new 350-acre preserve on Shaw Island.
