This is truly an exciting time to have joined the Preservation Trust. It’s been just over three months since my family and I made the big move from Kapaa, Kauai, to Shaw Island.
My 17-plus years of experience working in the conservation field in Hawaii had a profound influence on my understanding of our relationship to the land. Fundamental to Hawaiian culture is the understanding that humans and land exist in a reciprocal relationship. We share a common destiny, and the health of each depends on the existence and wellbeing of the other.

The rare and wonderful island marble butterfly is on the wing. Its field season has begun. With likely fewer than 200 marbles in existence and an adult lifespan often lasting 10 days or less, the butterfly’s opportunities to breed are limited and intense. Time is of the essence to support this enigmatic beauty and to help it find safe havens here on San Juan Island.

Vendovi Island is one of the Preservation Trust's most spectacular preserves, but it's hard to get there unless you have your own boat or manage to snag a coveted place in one of our Vendovi outings for SJPT members. That's about to change, however, with the advent of a new series of tours that Bellingham-based San Juan Cruises is launching this summer. And they're offering a discounted rate for SJPT members.

The spring wildflowers have put on their usual prolific and colorful show on Vendovi this year. Here's a gallery of camas, spring gold, fawn lilies and chocolate lilies captured during a Tiptop League trip to the island preserve on April 14. Thanks to the photographer, SJPT member Gene Helfman, for sharing these with us!

Besides alphabet soup, what do these acronyms have in common? If you are 70 ½ years old or older and have an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), they can all point to some nifty tax benefits for you, even as you support SJPT's work to conserve and protect the islands you love.

During the short flight back to Friday Harbor, he captured this iconic San Juan Islands view, complete with a ferry plying azure waters and snowy Mount Baker in the background.
