NotE FROM ANGELA:

growing community conservation - Part II

HR

(Adapted from Angela’s presentation at SJPT’s Annual Meeting on May 5. This is part two of a two-part series. Read part one here.)

As the land trust movement has matured over the past decades, it has gone through various evolutionary stages. The first stage is land acquisition; the second is an emphasis on stewardship and adoption of organizational standards of practice; and the third stage is community conservation. These three stages normally overlap in time and are not at all mutually exclusive. ...

summer social on shaw

Please join us for SJPT's 2018 Summer Social on Saturday, July 28, at the Ellis Family Preserve on Shaw Island, from 11:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for adults and free for kids under 12.

A free van will shuttle guests between the Shaw ferry landing and the Preserve, so no need to bring a car. You'll enjoy live music (including Shaw's own Kate Schuman), good food and beverages, historic tours (see below), a flea-market sale, and a self-guided walking tour of this wonderful preserve, so generously donated by the heirs of Fred and Marilyn Ellis.

magical History tour

On June 15, architectural historian Boyd Pratt led a well-attended tour of the Tharald Homestead—the historic structures on what is now known as the Ellis Family Preserve on Shaw Island. The homestead was settled in 1883 by Norwegian immigrant Theodore Tharald. The cabin that he and his brother, Thomas, built is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Boyd will lead two more tours during our Summer Social on July 28 at the Ellis Family Preserve. This is just another great reason to attend the Summer Social! (Read more about the event above.)

thank you, kurt thorson

When it came to conveying SJPT’s work visually, no one has provided more spectacular and compelling island images to us than did Kurt Thorson. On June 11, we lost Kurt to ALS. Through his eyes, we will continue see our islands and tell our stories. …

"Coming In For a Landing" is one of scores of photos that Kurt Thorson took on Vendovi Island starting in 2011, when the Preservation Trust was preparing to launch a multi-million-dollar acquisition campaign. Kurt's images evoked the wonders of Vendovi, inspiring hundreds of people who had never been there to contribute towards the campaign's ultimate success.

NEW GANN SOCIETY MARKERS

For this month's "Profile in Perpetuity," instead of introducing a Gann Society member, we decided to introduce a new way of honoring members of the Gann Society in memoriam.

We call them Gann Society memorial markers, and we recently installed the first one on SJPT's Graham Preserve (pictured at left). It memorializes Beverly Graham who, with her husband, Ernest Graham, bequeathed their 99-acre Shaw Island property to the Preservation Trust.

These custom-engraved, solid bronze markers will provide a lasting reminder of the permanent legacy that members of the Gann Society have made to conservation in these islands.

Learn about joining the Gann Society here.

The Gann Society

The Gann Society is a group of individuals who have notified us that they have provided for the San Juan Preservation Trust in their estate plans. Their planned giving will help protect the San Juan Islands forever. Please consider providing for the San Juan Preservation Trust in your will.
