Craig Canine, Communications and Outreach Manager, moved to Orcas Island from the Bay Area in 2007. Prior to joining the San Juan Preservation Trust, he worked as a journalist for 25 years, starting as a writer/editor at Newsweek in New York. His work has also appeared in Smithsonian, The Atlantic, Gourmet, Eating Well, OnEarth, and other magazines. He is the author of Dream Reaper, a critically acclaimed nonfiction book about agriculture and invention. He’s an avid hiker and boater, and is sometimes seen on the roads around West Sound riding a tandem bike with his wife, Myla.
Craig’s involvement in land conservation dates back to his junior-high-school days, when he was a student leader of the “Save Brown’s Woods” campaign in his home town of Des Moines, Iowa. He was a charter member and officer of the Richmond Land Trust in Richmond, Vermont. He has earned bachelors degrees from Princeton and Oxford universities.
