Discover the world of the Island Marble butterfly, a very rare species currently found only on San Juan and Lopez Islands.  After its "rediscovery" in 1998 (having not been seen since 1908 in the Gulf Islands), considerable research has been put towards helping scientists understand more about this beautiful white butterfly, including the determination of  the habitat characteristics it needs to survive.

The San Juan Preservation Trust is partnering with the National Park Service to provide this educational opportunity.  We welcome the public to join the National Park Service staff biologist on an informative outing at the San Juan Island National Historic Park's American Camp prairie, one of the last strongholds for this endemic species.  We will discuss Island Marble ecology and current research efforts while we stroll the prairie to search for the butterflies.

Meet at the American Camp visitor center at 1pm.  Bring shoes and clothing suitable for walking and binoculars. Our day will wrap up approximately at 3pm.
