Everyday is Earth Day but it's good to have a day where we celebrate our planet even more!

Here's a beautiful video from a preserve on San Juan Island that our stewardship staff took earlier this month.

What a scene. What a place. What an ecosystem.

The shooting star wildflowers look amazing with the mighty oak tree in the background.

Happy Earth Day!

The Ihiya Biological Preserve is all tidied up and ready for summer!

It was a really fun day earlier this week as a group volunteers and SJPT staff wandered the entire trail system at this small but lush preserve near the center of San Juan Island.

We couldn't have asked for better weather and the wildflowers were out in full force, especially the fawn lilies that seem to grow and multiply every year.

Thanks to all that showed up to help us steward this lovely place.

What a day to be out and about in these incredible islands!

Crow Valley Creek has been tubed!

Well, at least part of it has been, all as a part of an effort to restore the creek at the JB Farm Preserve in the center of Orcas Island's Crow Valley.

SJPT only recently started managing the stewardship of this place, but we've been hard at work installing hundreds of local species (willows trees and many berry plants, among other species) that should do very well down in the areas surrounding the creek that flows year-round.

All of the plants are all within a buffer zone that will be fenced off to protect them from grazing livestock and browsing deer while the tubes provide them with a bit of extra protection from the elements. In a few years, once the plants are healthy and established enough, we will remove the tubes and they will be free to grow into what will hopefully become an even more robust riparian corridor.

We're really looking forward to seeing what this area becomes and how it helps lay a good foundation for future restoration efforts in similar areas.

Want to check it out for yourself? Join us for a work party in June where we will focus on stewarding this area before the summer fully sets in.

Please go to sjpt.org/calendar to learn more about the event and to register before the list fills up. We hope to see you there!

We especially want to thank the San Juan County Conservation District for helping supply us with the protective tubes. They're incredible partners on this project and many others around the islands.
